Not every move is a whole home. A sofa bought second-hand across the city, a wardrobe going to a new flat, a washing machine heading to storage or a dining table sold online: single-item moves are small, but they still need the right vehicle, enough people to lift safely and access at both ends. This guide explains how to prepare one item for a move in Dubai and what to send single item movers so the quote matches the job.

Furniture and household moves are handled by the Cargo & Transport division of Emirates Way Cargo L.L.C., covering new and used furniture removal, dismantling, packing, moving and reassembly.
What counts as a single-item move
Usually one large item, or a few pieces travelling together between the same two addresses. Typical examples:
- Sofas, beds and mattresses
- Wardrobes, cabinets and chests of drawers
- Dining tables and chairs
- Fridges, washing machines and other large household appliances
- Furniture bought or sold second-hand that has to be collected from the seller
If the list grows to several rooms, it is closer to a full move; the furniture moving planning guide covers that.
Measure the item and the route
Most problems with one-item moves happen at doors, lifts and stairwells, not on the road. Before booking, measure:
- The item’s height, width and depth, and for sofas the diagonal depth, which decides whether it can be tilted through a doorway
- Door widths at both addresses, including the building entrance
- The inside of the lift car and its door opening, or the number of floors if stairs will be used
- Any tight turns in corridors or stairwells
If the item will not fit as it is, it may need to come apart: legs and backs on sofas, doors and panels on wardrobes, bed frames and table tops. Say so in the enquiry so dismantling and reassembly can be planned.
Collecting a second-hand purchase
When the item is still at the seller’s address, a few checks save a wasted trip:
- Get the seller’s exact location pin, floor number and a contact number for the day
- Check the real dimensions and condition from photos before booking
- Ask whether the seller’s building needs a permit or lift booking for items leaving
- Agree whether the item will be dismantled before collection or on the day
Settle payment with the seller before the collection time, so the item can be loaded as soon as the crew arrives.
Preparing appliances
Large appliances need some preparation by the owner before they are moved:
- Fridges and freezers: empty them, switch them off and defrost them in advance, and dry the inside so water does not leak in transit.
- Washing machines: disconnect and drain the hoses, and refit the transit bolts if you still have them.
Check the manufacturer’s manual before switching a fridge back on, as many recommend letting it stand upright for a period after being moved.
Building rules apply even for one item
Many residential buildings in Dubai ask for notice or a move permit from building management even when only one item is leaving or arriving, and some only allow moves through the service lift at set times. Check with both buildings before booking, and mention any loading area the vehicle has to use.
What affects the quote
For a single item, the price depends less on the item itself than on the work around it:
- The distance between the two addresses
- Floors, lift access and how far the item has to be carried to the vehicle
- Size and weight, which decide how many people are needed to lift it safely
- Dismantling and reassembly
- Wrapping or packing for protection
- The time window, especially where a building only allows set move hours
What to send single item movers
- A photo of the item and its measurements
- Pickup and delivery location pins, with floor numbers and lift or stair access
- Whether it needs dismantling, reassembly or wrapping
- Your preferred date and time window
- Any building rules or permits already known at either address

Frequently Asked Questions
Can furniture bought from a seller be collected and delivered to my home?
Yes. Send the seller’s location pin and floor, your delivery address and a photo of the item, and confirm the seller will be available at the collection time.
Will a sofa fit in my building’s lift?
Compare the sofa’s height, width and diagonal depth with the inside of the lift car and its door opening. If it is close, send the measurements and a photo; some sofas can be stood on end or have their legs and backs removed.
Is moving one item cheaper than moving a whole flat?
Generally, because it needs a smaller vehicle, fewer people and less time. The quote still depends on access, distance and handling at both addresses.
